The street artist, known as Banksy, has been in New York this October and has been “sharing his work” each day. Banksy is also a known prankster and the NYPD has been working hard to track him down, without success (at least up until the time of writing this).
But what really struck me as interesting is that he made his work available to anyone who wanted it for only $60 a piece. By the way, these are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, making this one of the best buys in history since the Louisiana Purchase of $1.00. The catch? No one knew it was his work. It was being sold by an old man who didn’t even have his first sale until the afternoon to a woman who negotiated 50% off and bought two. Another man from Chicago bought four pieces to decorate his new home. And there was one more buyer. That’s it. A total of $420 was made form selling these.
The following day, Banksy revealed on his website that tons of New Yorkers walked right by the deal of a lifetime. He even posted a video of the day’s events. Check it out here:
Why Banksy Did It
Why did he do this? Banksy is known for making a statement that art is sometimes more political than anything else. This was certainly one of those statements; they were only worth something significant, when the world found out that they were genuine pieces of Banksy art. Now this is only my guess, but I think I’m on the right track here.
You might not see Banksy art for sale under $100 again, but the lesson here to be learned is that if you see a piece of art that you like, buy it!
